Well I'm all abuot ATI, but as you can get a 256 MB version of the fx5600xt, for only 140 bucks, it may be worth looking into deeper. But I have no clue about nVida chipsets. It seems there's no less than 4 varieties of the 5600, I can't tell which is better, and ultra or an xt?

Go ATI. You won't have to worry about driver issues. At least not yet.

Ultra, methinks. Don't take my word for it though. I'm a hardware dunce.

Pick ATI for now. Nvidia doesn't have any driver issues, I have a FX5900.

Actually, Nvidia does have some driver issues. The latest driver has an issue regarding RTCW and you cannot play it with the current driver.
Though I've never had a single problem, productivity or performance wise with an Nvidia, I think I'll go ATI next time as I hear all you computer geeks splooge over ATI this and ATI that and OMG ATI HAX

I didn't have any problems with my NVidia drivers as long as I used the ones it shipped with. It was when I updated them that I had problems.

The only way you could get an almost defining opinion is from someone who has both cards, and of course it's doubtful you could find someone who does.
I guess you have to analyse and weigh up the opinions posted here, or elsewhere for that matter.

That 9700 is a great card. I bought it bout 2 years ago @ Best Buy as an open box item for 180. It retailed at 400 bucks then. I recently scrapped it for a 9800 pro (128mb) only cuz a guy I work with bought a bunch of dells for his brother's business and sold it to me for $50 bucks. (LOL I love making people sick).
Get it, know it, love it.
