okay, so i tryed it on my home pc, it's 3:47 am, i'm the one with the best vid card, a 5700 ultra, followed by an 9600 xt, a 5600, and a lot of mx's.

on the 5700 and the 9600 (actually we are lan partying :P) it looks gorgeous, almost cinematic quality, around 50fps @ 1600x1200 on the 5700, and about 42 on the 9600.

but mind you, on the mx's it also looks pretty kewl, just like you didn't expected it to run (800x600 at med q, about 33fps) so it really doesn't need the "killer pc" everyone says it needs. also it looked very good on a ti4600 and on a geforce 3 ti 400 i believe.

just be sure to have a couple of spare briefs liying near you. it really can scare the **** outta you.

the thing we most liked, and this is for the lucky owners of a 5.1 sound system: there is a paranoia factor, you start hearing voices, and sounds, but the coolest of things is that you hear them all around you, not just on one side.

i don't wanna give out spoilers, but it is indeed a good game.

on the multiplayer side of it, it comes with some small maps, designed for about 4 people, but on the box it says 1-16 so it might just be some tweaking on our side. even when 4 people seem like a small croud, it doens't feel like if you were on an empty server, it is very very fun. Aside from the lagger we have (55ms lag time, on a lan :S).

BTW, when you say 9600, is that comparable to my Radeon 9600 Pro? (Please say it is...).

i havent been able to bump it up to the 'ultra' quality setting, but i do manage to get around 55 to 60 on most parts, while the ati went at about 45-50

So I played multiplayer a bit. I don't know what this four-player nonsense is, I got onto a server with 16. The gameplay is very much like Quake III Arena. In other words, not as good as RTCW, ET, BF1942, CoD, etc.

Weapons I've used:

Pistol: slow firing, not much fun.
Shotgun: a little weak, the gun skin is uninspired
Machine Gun: good, but the skin isn't great
chain gun: doesn't cycle fast enough IMNSHO, which would make it awesome
Plasma Gun: eh. Blue balls of fire.
Rocket Launcher: pretty decent. Need to use it more to be sure.

The ambience rocks, though.

I did a trade in on some other games I had lying around and got Doom3 for $35. It is defintely a visually stunning game. Even on my near-POS computer, it runs and looks great. Way to go id software! :)

I tried to get some screenies last night when following a sentry bot that was helping. may have gotten a good one or two. This game seriously r0xors.

How does one make a movie in the quake engine, and export it as an mpg or wmv?

The easiest way is with something like Fraps. You can record a demo and then use the demotoavi capabilties to create a movie file. it won't have sound though which sux0rs.

The Fraps examples have audio. I might buy it just so I can make movies of some of the awesome scenes in this game.

I tried it out a bit this morning and Fraps makes a traditionally difficult and time consuming process easy. The only extra work you need to do is take the AVI it creates and compress it with Divx or something. Otherwise, you are stuck with an enourmous full-frame AVI.

A good tool for this is AVI to MPEG (http://www.flydragonsoft.com/compress-avi.htm). I converted a 375 MB clip full-frame AVI to Divx AVI and it ended up around 16 MB.

To get a .avi demo bring down the console (ctrl+alt+~) and type aviDemo it Saves a demo of your playing to an AVI movie file.

I got doom III at Best Buy for $69.99 CDN, reminded me of Warcraft 3's price. I didn't even bother to take the free copy of Dues Ex II: Invisible War, not that I saw it around anywhere. You need a program like WinRAR to open it. I dont know if any other file compression programs can uncompress RAR files. Once you do get it uncompressed it should just contain a replacement doom3sp.exe file or whatever its called. You move your orignial .exe to a different folder and put the new .exe where the old one was.
